December 2024 — Monthly Briefing¶
1. What was read¶
665 research articles from 33 of the 33 journals on the roster.
A further 316 records (32% of the 981 this month's harvest returned) carry no abstract and are not research: news, correspondence, editor highlights and obituaries. PubMed types them Journal Article and nothing else, so the publication-type filter cannot see them — across the whole index they are 22.7% of it and 35% of general, and 3,801 of them are JAMA. Every count below is over the full harvest and is inflated by this; the figure above is not.
| General | Cancer | Immune | Bioinfo | Sysbio |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 424 | 219 | 73 | 241 | 24 |
Largest contributors: JAMA 100, Nature 72, Science 64, Bioinformatics 59, Nat Med 57, Blood 55.
2. Net change on the thread curve¶
| Thread | This month | Cumulative | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
agentic-ai |
+2 | +8 / −0 | forming |
cell-therapy |
+4 / −1 | +145 / −44 | forming |
ctdna-mrd |
+2 | +47 / −22 | forming |
foundation-models |
+7 / −1 | +76 / −49 | splitting |
immunotherapy-resistance |
+4 | +152 / −61 | forming |
interception |
+1 / −1 | +83 / −18 | forming |
method-credibility |
−10 | +10 / −306 | crisis |
neoantigen-vaccines |
— | +55 / −23 | forming |
neuro-immune-microbiome-axis |
— | +105 / −13 | forming |
next-gen-checkpoints |
— | +49 / −30 | splitting |
single-cell-3d-genome |
— | +48 / −15 | forming |
suppressive-population-inversion |
— | +34 / −45 | contested |
Status is derived by rule, not asserted. Fewer than 5 cards → too-early; then refutes ≥ 2×supports → crisis; refutes > supports → contested; supports ≥ 2×refutes → forming; else splitting.
3. The evidence that moved it¶
"Virtual cell" is in a Cell title in December 2024. 39672099: how to build the virtual cell with artificial intelligence — priorities and opportunities. This corpus has now dated the arrival of that vocabulary three times: 2025-11, then 2025-04 after the first backfill, and now 2024-12. Each date was the earliest month then being read. The honest conclusion is not a fourth date but the retirement of the question.
AI agents reach an oncology journal in December 2024, not June 2025. 39690222 (Nat Cancer): how AI agents will change cancer research and oncology, a three-page comment over five named authors. The corpus's dated diffusion chain — general and methods bench in February 2025, oncology in June, immunology in December, "ten months" — is wrong at its origin and wrong at its oncology waypoint. Both move back about six months, and the lag it measured was an artefact of where reading began.
Corrected 2026-08-27
This paragraph paired the comment with 39690213, "foundation models in
clinical oncology", "published in the same issue" — which reads as two
independent statements arriving together. It is a single-page research
highlight on page 1790, written by one journal editor, with no abstract and
no reference list, summarising work published elsewhere. A journal's own
front matter is not a second voice on the subject the journal is covering,
and the waypoint above rests on the comment alone. That card is now
neutral.
Agents doing production work. 39718779: an LLM-assisted workflow mines thousands of enzyme-substrate interactions from published manuscripts. Not a demonstration and not a benchmark — a literature-scale extraction job.
4. Refutations¶
(a) Landing on a tracked thread¶
Three refutations land on a tracked thread other than method-credibility, and
two of them are negative clinical readouts.
39352751 (Blood) — high-dose
intravenous ascorbic acid produced no responses in TET2-mutant clonal cytopenia of
undetermined significance. This is interception's whole proposition tested in
the population it was designed for: a defined precursor state, a mutation that
names a mechanism, a cheap and widely promoted intervention, and nothing.
39333315 (Nat Med) — a
cytokine-driven resistance mechanism specific to AML blunted CD123 CAR-T activity,
with responses in only a minority of patients treated. cell-therapy's difficulty
outside B-cell malignancy usually gets attributed to antigen choice; here the
resistance is in the disease's cytokine environment, which no change of target
addresses.
The third is the harms toolbox in (b) below,
39313595, which is carded against
foundation-models as well as on method credibility.
Corrected 2026-09-04
This section read "Nothing lands on a tracked thread this month." Three refutations do. December 2024 had been carded from titles, and the ascorbic acid title — "High-dose IV ascorbic acid therapy for patients with CCUS with TET2 mutations" — names the intervention and the population and never the outcome, so a title-only reading could not see the negative in it. Section 3 of this month is largely about vocabulary and priority dates; these two clinical readouts were the substantive events in it.
(b) Method credibility¶
39313595 (Nat Med): a toolbox for surfacing health-equity harms and biases in large language models. December 2024 has, in the same month, the virtual-cell manifesto, the AI-agents-in-oncology comment, a drug-repurposing foundation model (39322717, TxGNN) and this harms toolbox. The enthusiasm and the audit are not separated in time anywhere in this corpus once the window is wide enough to check, and every claim this corpus has made about a lag between them has been withdrawn.
Corrected 2026-08-27
This sentence counted "three drug-repurposing foundation models" and cited
two PMIDs for them. There is one. 39448863 is a two-page Nature
Medicine News & Views, pages 3422-3423, by Bessadok and Grisoni, on
TxGNN — 39322717, pages 3601-3613 of the same issue — and its reference
list cites that paper directly. It was carded as a model in its own right
because its title is nearly a copy of the title it discusses, which is the
same failure as the Cell preview in April, eight months earlier in this
same corpus. Its card is now neutral and typed commentary.
What 2024 was for
Twelve months were added to test five "first appearance" claims. All five moved earlier, and eight of thirteen threads now open in 2024-01 — the first month that exists. The correct reading of that is not that 2024 was where things started. It is that this instrument cannot date beginnings, only floors, and it should stop trying.
5. Open items¶
Nothing carried forward.
6. Meetings¶
No abstract book published this month. The abstract layer runs 2023-02 to 2026-08 and is seasonal by nature — meetings are annual, so most months are empty here and that is the expected shape, not a gap in the harvest.
7. Regulatory¶
| Event | Count |
|---|---|
| trial-first-posted | 481 (of which 407 genuinely oncology) |
| fda-approval | 7 |
| ema-authorisation | 5 |
7 FDA actions — dated from each notice's own prose, not the table's posting date, which disagrees on 7 of 190 rows and once by enough to move an approval into the wrong month:
