ESHG 2026¶
59th European Human Genetics Conference — Svenska Mässan (Swedish Exhibition & Congress Centre), Gothenburg, Sweden · June 13 – 16, 2026 (hybrid; pre-conference courses Jun 11 – 12). ~3,000 attendees expected — the European counterpart to ASHG and the largest human-genetics meeting in Europe.
Status: Scaffold — meeting is ~5 weeks out as of today (May 11, 2026). Programme-at-a-Glance is public; ~130 confirmed speakers listed; session grid (PL1–PL7, E01–E07, I01–I18, S01–S26, C01–C41) released. Award-lecture assignments (Mendel Lecture, ESHG Award Lecture, ELPAG Award Lecture, Young Investigator Awards) not yet matched to specific speakers in the public materials — flagged inline. Anything in this vault before May 11 is reconstructed from the official Programme-at-a-Glance, the Speakers list, ASHG 2025 / ESHG 2025 prior-year shape, and consortium dashboards (FinnGen, UK Biobank, Generation R, GeneRISK) — flagged inline.
Why this is in the vault¶
ESHG is the European twin to ASHG and the venue where European biobank readouts, the Nordic / Karolinska clinical-genetics network, and the German / Dutch / UK rare-disease consortia present first. The overlap with the cancer-genomics corpus is asymmetric but load-bearing, and the European angle (single-payer health systems, EU GDPR-shaped data governance, EMA pharmacogenomics framing) gives ESHG a different read on the same biology than ASHG:
- Hereditary cancer in European cohorts. BRCA / Lynch / Li-Fraumeni cohort studies anchored in European registries (Dutch HEBON, Swedish SweBCG, UK CanRisk, German GC-HBOC) present first at ESHG. Variant-classification debates at ESHG seed ClinVar updates downstream.
- European biobank readouts. FinnGen (Finland, ~520k participants), UK Biobank (~500k), Generation R (Rotterdam), GeneRISK (Finnish polygenic-risk pilot), Estonian Biobank, deCODE — all first-class at ESHG. Cancer-relevant subsets (cancer-PRS, hereditary-cancer prevalence, somatic mosaicism) anchor the methods feeding AACR / ASCO downstream.
- Pharmacogenomics and clinical implementation. Ubiquitous-PGx rollouts in the Nordic countries, the Netherlands, and the UK are an ESHG specialty. Drug-gene pair adoption (DPYD, TPMT, CYP2D6, UGT1A1) for oncology drugs has clearer European clinical-pathway data than US.
- AI in clinical genomics — EU AI Act framing. Foundation models for variant effect, dysmorphology AI, and AI-assisted prenatal screening all carry an EU regulatory overlay at ESHG that ASHG largely doesn't surface.
- ELSI / ELPAG. The Ethics and Public Policy thread at ESHG (ELPAG track + dedicated Award Lecture) is proportionally larger than ASHG ELSI, with GDPR / EU AI Act / cross-border biobanking as recurring axes.
Hybrid template (and the design decision behind this vault): ESHG, like ASHG, is neither pure-clinical (ASCO) nor pure-tools (EuroBioC) — most program slots are "investigator-talk anchored on a study + method + cohort," so the unit of analysis is the talk, not the trial and not the tool. The closest sibling shape in the vault is ASHG 2026, which we mirror directly — single talks/ directory with a schema that accommodates tool-anchored / clinical-study-anchored / methods-anchored / award-lecture entries. For ESHG we additionally tag European-cohort talks (FinnGen / UKB / Generation R / GeneRISK / Estonian Biobank / deCODE) because that's the differentiator from ASHG.

Organization¶

├── index.md # this page
├── program-notes.md # pre-meeting prep: dates, venue, tracks, expected highlights, award-lecture watch list, key dates, European-cohort watch list
└── talks/ # PRIMARY artifact — one entry per talk (tool / study / methods / award, cancer-genomics-prioritized + European-cohort-tagged)
└── index.md # template + master talk index table
Day-by-day digest (digest/day-N-*.md), cross-day themes.md, and a separate keynotes/ directory are deferred until closer to the meeting (the Programme-at-a-Glance is already public, but session-by-session timing reconciliation pays off better in early June). The talks/ table can be filtered by Anchor type (tool / study / methods / award) and by European cohort tag without splitting into separate directories.
What's different from ASHG¶
- European biobanks first-class. FinnGen, UK Biobank, Generation R, GeneRISK, Estonian Biobank, deCODE updates anchor the cohort-talk slate. ASHG carries these too but ESHG carries them with more clinical-implementation depth (single-payer system pathways, national-cohort registry overlays).
- Clinical-genetics weight. ESHG runs proportionally more dysmorphology, prenatal, carrier-screening, and genetic-counseling content than ASHG. The "Dysmorphology Interactive Sessions" are a signature ESHG format.
- EU regulatory overlay. GDPR, EU AI Act, IVDR, EMA pharmacogenomics framing all surface throughout ESHG sessions. ELPAG is the ELSI track and has its own Award Lecture; the ELSI proportion of the programme is higher than ASHG ELSI.
- Smaller scale. ~3,000 attendees vs ~7,500 at ASHG. Fewer parallel platform sessions, but density of European-cohort + clinical-implementation content is higher per session.
- June timing. ESHG runs concurrent with the spring oncology cycle (ASCO 2026 May 29 – Jun 2 and EHA 2026 Jun 11 – 14), so cancer-genomics overlap with the same week's heme readouts is unusually tight. EHA 2026 (Stockholm) and ESHG 2026 (Gothenburg) are both in Sweden the same week — Sweden is the European-oncology / genomics hub for mid-June 2026.
- Open-access disposition. EJHG (Nature Portfolio) and HGG Advances (Cell Press) are both hybrid open-access. Citability is high. Abstract supplement has DOIs per entry.
- Pre-conference courses. ESHG runs a flagship Clinical NGS Data Interpretation Course (Jun 11–12) that doubles as the European clinical-laboratory training event for the year — load-bearing for clinical-implementation talks during the main meeting.
Cross-vault links¶
- ASHG 2026 — the US-side twin. Hereditary-cancer panel design, gnomAD, cancer-PRS, foundation-model variant-effect predictors all show up at both meetings (ESHG first in June, ASHG with longer datasets in October). Many investigators present at both.
- AACR 2026 — cancer-biology / mechanism side. Hereditary cancer panels, germline-somatic integration, cancer-PRS investigators overlap. Rare-cancers symposium (S-track) at ESHG aligns with AACR rare-cancer sessions.
- ASCO 2026 — clinical translation (May 29 – Jun 2, immediately before ESHG). Cancer-PRS, hereditary-cancer-informed trial stratification, pharmacogenomics-guided oncology dosing — methods that surface at ESHG inform the European arm of trials reported at ASCO.
- EHA 2026 — runs Jun 11 – 14 in Stockholm, same week, same country. Clonal hematopoiesis at population scale and gene-therapy genomics (sickle cell / beta-thalassemia) tie ESHG cohort talks to EHA clinical readouts. Cross-attendance is feasible (Gothenburg ↔ Stockholm ~3.5h train).
- ASH 2026 — December follow-on for the CHIP / hematology bridge.
- ISMB 2026 / RECOMB 2026 / ECCB 2026 — methods overlap (variant calling, deep-learning variant-effect predictors, foundation models for genomics). ECCB 2026 (Aug 31 – Sep 4) is the closest methods-meeting sibling.
- AGBT 2026 — platform-launch overlap. Long-read clinical sequencing platforms that debut at AGBT in February show up applied (Clinical NGS course + S/C-track talks) at ESHG in June.
- EuroBioC 2025 tools — Bioconductor packages used in ESHG analyses (statistical-genetics tooling, multi-omics, single-cell). Many European Bioconductor maintainers present applied work at ESHG.
- Conferences timeline — ESHG's position in the year's genomics cycle (AGBT Feb → AACR Apr → ASCO May/Jun → ESHG + EHA Jun → ISMB Jul → ESMO/ASHG Oct → SITC Nov → ASH Dec → JPM Jan).
Next step¶
- Now (May 11 – Jun 13, T-5w to opening plenary): populate
program-notes.mdwith the published programme-at-a-glance, the speaker shortlist, the award-lecture watch list (Mendel / ESHG Award / ELPAG / Young Investigator), and the European-cohort-update watch list (FinnGen R13, UK Biobank WGS proteomics overlay, Generation R, GeneRISK, Estonian Biobank, deCODE). Pre-build top stubs from the public Programme-at-a-Glance. - EJHG abstract supplement (~early June 2026, typically week of the meeting): when EJHG publishes the meeting supplement, fill in full-text + DOIs per stub.
- Pre-conference courses (Jun 11 – 12): Clinical NGS Data Interpretation Course content is candidate material for
talks/if cancer-genomics-relevant. - Live meeting (Jun 13 – Jun 16): real-time capture per day if standing up the digest/ directory. Hybrid format — plenary sessions livestreamed; on-demand replay via the virtual platform.
- Post-meeting (Jun 17 – Jul 31, 2026): finalize
themes.md. Expected threads (speculative, to be revised): FinnGen R13 + UK Biobank cancer-PRS convergence, ecDNA in cancer crossing from ASHG/AACR into ESHG, EU AI Act clinical-deployment framing for foundation-model variant predictors, pan-European hereditary-cancer panel harmonization (CanRisk + HEBON + GC-HBOC + SweBCG cross-cohort), pharmacogenomics-guided oncology rollouts in the Nordic + Dutch systems.
