ASHG 2026

76th American Society of Human Genetics Annual Meeting — Palais des Congrès de Montréal, Montréal, Québec, Canada · October 20 – 24, 2026. ~7,500 attendees from 75 countries — the largest human-genetics and genomics meeting of the year.

Status: Scaffold — meeting is ~5 months out as of today (May 11, 2026). The structure lands now so we can move quickly on the abstract submission window (closes May 18, 2026), the program-at-a-glance release (typically early-September), and the live-coverage build during the meeting itself. Anything in this vault dated before the abstract supplement / program release is built from ASHG meeting-site previews, prior-year program shape (ASHG 2025 Boston), and partner-lab press from JPM 2026 / AACR 2026 — flagged inline.

Why this is in the vault

ASHG is the methods-and-biology source for the cancer-genomics corpus. Same investigators as AACR's population-genetics, hereditary-cancer, and bioinformatics sessions — one venue earlier, with a much wider denominator (Mendelian disease, prenatal, population genetics, ethics). The overlap with the AACR / ASCO oncology cycle is asymmetric but load-bearing:

  1. Hereditary cancer panels and germline-somatic integration. ASHG is where the panel-design talks, ClinVar curation updates, and variant-classification debates live. The same investigators show up at AACR with somatic-overlay analyses six months earlier.
  2. Polygenic risk scores in oncology. PRS methodology is an ASHG specialty (UK Biobank, All of Us, MVP, FinnGen, GBMI). Cancer-PRS talks at ASHG seed the clinical-utility readouts that arrive at ASCO 12–18 months later.
  3. Large-cohort sequencing readouts. All of Us, UK Biobank WGS, gnomAD updates, GREGoR, GenomeAsia, H3Africa — all premiere at ASHG. Cancer-relevant subsets (germline pan-cancer, somatic mosaicism, clonal hematopoiesis) anchor downstream AACR / ASH talks.
  4. Methods development. GWAS pipelines, rare-variant burden tests, fine-mapping, ancestry inference, single-cell genetics — many of the tools that show up in AACR cancer-genomics posters debut as ASHG methods talks.

Hybrid template (and the design decision behind this vault): ASHG is neither pure-clinical (ASCO) nor pure-tools (EuroBioC) — most program slots are "investigator-talk anchored on a study + method + cohort," so the unit of analysis is the talk, not the trial and not the tool. The closest sibling shape in the vault is SITC 2026, which runs trials + tools side-by-side. For ASHG we collapse to a single talks/ directory with a schema that accommodates both flavors (tool-anchored / clinical-study-anchored / methods-anchored), with the cancer-genomics subset prioritized.

ASHG 2026 Meeting site program-at-a-glance, plenary slate, pre-meeting workshops ashgmeeting.ashg.org — primary
ASHG main site award announcements, society news, meeting metadata ashg.org
The American Journal of Human Genetics (AJHG) program issue (October), abstract supplement, Allan/Stern award essays cell.com/ajhg
Human Genetics & Genomics Advances (HGGA) open-access companion journal, methods + cohort papers cell.com/hgg-advances
ASHG press program embargoed media briefings during the meeting press releases wire-syndicated same day
Trade press GenomeWeb, Bio-IT World, Endpoints, STAT (limited ASHG coverage) GenomeWeb has the deepest editorial; sub-required
Pre-prints (medRxiv / bioRxiv) accompanying preprints typically posted week-of search by author + "ASHG 2026" in comments
Cohort / consortium press All of Us, UK Biobank, gnomAD, AoU Research Hub — public dashboards / blogs aligned releases timed to ASHG
Social #ASHG26 on X / Bluesky useful for real-time room reactions; methods-Twitter is unusually active

The AJHG meeting-program issue + abstract supplement is the load-bearing primary source — every accepted abstract gets a citable PMID, and the published-talks essays (Allan Award + Curt Stern Award) appear in AJHG within ~3 months of the meeting. Per-talk pages should cite the AJHG abstract / award essay, not the trade-press recap.

Day-by-day digest (digest/day-N-*.md), cross-day themes.md, and a separate keynotes/ directory are deferred until the program-at-a-glance is public (typically early-September 2026), modeled on the ASCO 2026 / Nextflow Summit 2026 / JPM 2026 vaults. If the program supports it, the talks/ table can be filtered by Anchor type (tool / study / methods) without splitting into separate directories.

What's different from sibling meetings

  • Wider denominator than AACR. AACR is cancer-only; ASHG is all of human genetics with cancer as one of ~10 tracks. The cancer-genomics subset of ASHG is small in absolute terms but high-value because the methods land here first.
  • Methods-paper density. Closer in flavor to ISMB / RECOMB than to AACR — many ASHG plenary talks are accompanied by a Nature Genetics / AJHG / Cell paper landing the same week. The talks-paper coupling is unusually tight.
  • Cohort-and-consortium-heavy. All of Us, UK Biobank, gnomAD, GREGoR, MVP, FinnGen, H3Africa, GenomeAsia, GBMI updates anchor the program. Cohort talks at ASHG read like infrastructure announcements at a tools meeting.
  • No drug names. Unlike ASCO, ASCO Plenary, ASH, ESMO — ASHG talks are about variants, cohorts, methods, and biology. Drug-development cross-links are downstream (cancer-PRS → trial-stratification at ASCO; hereditary-cancer panel → SERENA-style trial design).
  • Open-access disposition. AJHG and HGGA are both Cell Press, both increasingly open-access; AoU and UK Biobank are public-dashboard. Citability is high; paywalls are low.
  • Trainee-heavy. ASHG runs the largest trainee-award and travel-support program of any society in genomics. Trainee Research Excellence Award presenters often anchor the most-cited talks of the meeting.
  • AACR 2026 — cancer-biology / mechanism side. Hereditary-cancer panels, germline-somatic integration, and cancer-PRS investigators overlap. Many ASHG cancer-genetics PIs have AACR sessions in April.
  • ASCO 2026 — clinical translation. Cancer-PRS for trial stratification, germline-informed CDK4/6 / PARP-i selection — methods that mature at ASHG arrive at ASCO with patient outcomes.
  • ASH 2026 — clonal hematopoiesis bridge. CHIP / CCUS / MN-predisposition is a shared topic; ASHG runs the population-genetics framing, ASH runs the clinical sequelae.
  • ISMB 2026 / RECOMB 2026 — methods overlap (variant calling, deep-learning variant effect predictors, foundation models for genomics). Some methods papers have a talk at all three meetings in a single year.
  • EuroBioC 2025 tools — Bioconductor packages used in ASHG analyses (statistical-genetics tooling, multi-omics, single-cell).
  • AGBT 2026 — platform-launch overlap. Long-read clinical sequencing, single-cell-spatial, and methylome platforms that debut at AGBT in February show up applied at ASHG in October.
  • Conferences timeline — ASHG's position in the year's genomics cycle (AGBT Feb → AACR Apr → ASCO May/Jun → ISMB Jul → ESMO/ASHG Oct → SITC Nov → ASH Dec → JPM Jan).

Next step

  • Now (May 11 – May 18, abstract submission window closing): populate program-notes.md with the expected cancer-genomics-relevant tracks, award-lecture watch list (Allan / Stern / McKusick / Mendel speculation), and the named-cohort-update watch list (All of Us, UK Biobank WGS, gnomAD v5, GREGoR, GBMI). Pre-build top stubs only after program release.
  • Program-at-a-glance release (early-September 2026): when ASHG posts the session grid, expand talks/ stubs to match the cancer-genomics-relevant subset of the program. Expected ~30–50 high-priority talks for full pages.
  • AJHG abstract supplement (~September 2026): when AJHG publishes the meeting-program issue, fill in full-text + PMIDs per stub.
  • Live meeting (Oct 20 – Oct 24): real-time capture per day. Hybrid format — most plenary and platform sessions livestreamed; on-demand replay available for ~30 days post-meeting.
  • Post-meeting (Nov – Dec 2026): finalize themes.md. Expected threads (speculative, to be revised): cancer-PRS clinical utility convergence, long-read clinical sequencing inflection, foundation-model variant-effect predictors maturity, somatic mosaicism in non-cancer phenotypes, AoU + UK Biobank cancer-genomics co-readouts.
