G4X Spatial Sequencer — Singular Genomics¶
Singular's high-throughput spatial sequencer, officially released the week of AGBT and positioned head-to-head with Xenium / MERSCOPE / CosMx.
At a glance¶
- Vendor / launch date / availability: Singular Genomics; officially released the week of AGBT 2026 (Marco Island, Feb 22–25) per GEN AGBT 2026 recap, Feb 2026.
- Chemistry / modality: Spatial multiomics sequencer (in-situ readout on tissue sections).
- Throughput (PR): 128 samples per run across 40 cm² of tissue area per GEN AGBT 2026 recap, Feb 2026 (vendor PR — no independent benchmark).
- Workflow: 5-day end-to-end workflow per GEN AGBT 2026 recap, Feb 2026 (vendor PR — no independent benchmark).
- Reagent cost: ~$100s/sample reagent cost per GEN AGBT 2026 recap, Feb 2026 (vendor PR — no independent benchmark).
What's new vs prior generation¶
G4X is Singular's first dedicated spatial product, extending the G4 short-read sequencer chassis into in-situ tissue readout. The 128-samples-per-run footprint and 40 cm² tissue capacity are the highest sample-multiplexing numbers claimed by any AGBT 2026 spatial vendor; the 5-day workflow is positioned as competitive with Xenium's multi-day cycle.
Headline benchmarks¶
128 samples / 40 cm² tissue area / 5-day workflow / ~$100s/sample reagent (vendor PR — no independent benchmark) — GEN AGBT 2026 recap, Feb 2026.
Plex (gene / protein channel count), resolution, and detection efficiency relative to Xenium / MERSCOPE / CosMx not surfaced in public coverage — TBD.
Reception / competitive context¶
Trade coverage placed G4X as the surprise spatial entrant of AGBT 2026, with the per-sample cost pitch directly threatening Xenium's reagent economics. GenomeWeb's spatial roundup (Feb 2026) frames G4X alongside Bruker CellScape, Vizgen MERSCOPE Ultra, and Stellaromics Pyxa as the cohort of platforms now competing for shelf space against the incumbent Xenium / MERSCOPE / CosMx trio.
Cross-links¶
- Downstream Bioconductor stack: SpatialData, SpatialExperiment, OSTA — readers will likely need to be written for the G4X output format.
- Competitive set: 10x Xenium RNA+Protein, Bruker CosMx, Vizgen MERSCOPE Ultra / MERFISH 2.0.
