Q70 duplex kits — Illumina¶
At a glance¶
- Vendor: Illumina
- Launch date / venue: AGBT 2026 (Marco Island, FL, Feb 22–25, 2026)
- Availability: Early access H2 2026; broad rollout TBD per Illumina AGBT 2026 conference page
- Modality: Duplex chemistry kit for NovaSeq X (instrument-compatible, kit-only)
- Target accuracy: Q70 duplex per Illumina AGBT 2026 PR (vendor PR — no independent benchmark)
- List price: TBD (kit-only; no new instrument capex)
What's new¶
Q70 duplex kits are a chemistry upgrade for the installed NovaSeq X / X Plus base — no instrument swap required. The pitch is a 100× error-rate reduction over conventional Q40 short-read calls by using duplex (both strands of a molecule) consensus, putting Illumina in direct accuracy contention with PacBio HiFi and Roche Axelios SBX duplex on per-base error, while retaining NovaSeq throughput economics.
Headline benchmarks¶
- Q70 target accuracy — vendor ceiling claim; no third-party concordance or rare-variant validation has been disclosed at AGBT per Illumina AGBT 2026 page (vendor PR — no independent benchmark).
- Throughput / cost-per-Gb impact vs. standard NovaSeq X kits not yet quantified in public materials.
Reception / competitive context¶
Q70 is Illumina's accuracy-ceiling answer to Roche Axelios 1 (Q38 duplex, long-read SBX) and PacBio SPRQ-Hq (HiFi at SMRT-cell-reuse economics). Because it ships on installed NovaSeq X fleets, the switching cost for existing high-throughput labs is reagent-only, which trade press flagged as the strategically important detail of Illumina's AGBT 2026 announcement bundle per GEN AGBT 2026 recap.
Cross-links¶
- Companion launch: TruPath (synthetic long-read on the same NovaSeq X instrument) — Illumina's two-pronged "same box, two reads" pitch.
- Competitive: Roche Axelios 1, PacBio SPRQ-Hq.
