Cell Bio 2026 — Program Notes

Pre-meeting working notes. The meeting is 7 months out as of May 11, 2026. Most of this document is forward-looking and reconstructed from the ASCB-announced keynote / symposia slate, Cell Bio 2025 program shape, the published Cell Bio 2026 abstract category list, and bioRxiv signal in the AACR / EuroBioC / GBCC corpus that previews ASCB-bound work. Anything not explicitly cited to a Cell Bio 2026 announcement is speculative, flagged inline, and to be reconciled when the program-at-a-glance posts (~Sep – Oct 2026).

Anticipated themes — top 5 to watch

All entries below are speculative, sourced from the Cell Bio 2025 program, the keynote slate composition for 2026, AACR 2026 single-cell / spatial echo, and bioRxiv preprint pacing in the relevant areas.

Theme 1 — Organelle contact sites as the new functional unit

ER – mitochondria, ER – lysosome, ER – plasma-membrane, mitochondria – lysosome contact-site biology has matured from descriptive cataloguing (2015 – 2020) into mechanism (2021 – 2024) and now into therapeutic substrate (2025 – 2026). The Hegde keynote on ER membrane biology and protein quality control sits squarely in this lineage. Expect symposia / minisymposia where:

  • Contact-site tethers (VAPA / B, ORPs, PDZD8) are characterized in cancer / neurodegeneration contexts
  • Lipid transfer at contact sites is linked to autophagy initiation and ferroptosis sensitivity
  • AACR overlap: ferroptosis-induction therapeutic strategies, autophagy modulator clinical programs

Theme 2 — Autophagy / lysosomal biology as therapeutic mechanism

A continuing thread from the Cell Bio 2024 and 2025 programs. ULK1 / ATG complex regulation, selective autophagy receptors (NBR1, p62, NDP52, OPTN), mitophagy, ferritinophagy, lysosomal exocytosis. Therapeutic relevance accelerates from Deciphera, Sutro, autophagy-modulator clinical programs and the broader proteostasis / TPD axis. Expect:

  • Selective autophagy of organelles (mitophagy, ER-phagy, lipophagy) in cancer cell biology
  • Lysosomal biogenesis / TFEB axis as druggable
  • AACR overlap: KEAP1 / NRF2 axis, NSCLC autophagy-dependence sub-segments, pancreatic autophagy programs

Theme 3 — AI / foundation models for cell biology and bioimaging

New surface. Cell-state foundation models, virtual-cell predictions, and image-foundation models are starting to appear in Cell Bio programs. The Luo keynote on cell-type taxonomy (single-neuron tracing) is methodologically adjacent to this thread. Expect:

  • Image-foundation models (CellSAM, MorphoNet) demonstrated on cell-biology workflows
  • Cellpose 3 / Stardist updates in tool talks
  • Virtual-cell models (CZI Virtual Cell Initiative, Tahoe-100M class) in cell-state prediction
  • AACR overlap: virtual-cells axis at AACR 2026 (ED03 educational session and topics/virtual-cells dossier)
  • MICCAI overlap: medical-imaging foundation-model work crosses into cell-bio imaging

Theme 4 — Super-resolution + expansion microscopy + lattice light-sheet convergence

Imaging hardware and computational pipeline updates that are characteristic of ASCB's Advanced Tools track:

  • MINFLUX / DNA-PAINT / SMLM continued evolution and accessibility
  • Expansion microscopy with iterative protocols (e.g., 10x ExM, X10 ExM, magnify) for ultrastructural cell biology at light-microscope cost
  • Lattice light-sheet + adaptive optics in live tissue
  • Open-source image analysis (Cellpose 3, Stardist, napari plugins) and ZeroCostDL4Mic-style training resources
  • Cross-link: EuroBioC 2025 HistoImagePlot, GBCC 2025 image-analysis workshops, MICCAI 2026 medical imaging methods

Theme 5 — Organoid / assembloid cell-state programming + regeneration biology

The Tanaka keynote (axolotl regeneration, blastema cell-state) frames the regeneration thread. Convergence with stem-cell organoid programs:

  • Brain / cortical assembloids and neural-circuit reconstruction at organoid scale
  • Gut, lung, liver, kidney organoid maturation and cell-state taxonomies
  • Single-cell + spatial mapping of organoid heterogeneity
  • AACR overlap: cancer organoid models in pre-clinical drug-discovery sessions
  • Cross-link: AACR 2026 single-cell axis, ASCO 2026 patient-derived-organoid trial cohorts
